Do you stop yourself from pursuing your heartfelt desires?
Do you talk yourself out of taking steps toward a vision that has been calling to you?
Do you sense something is missing from your life that would make it more fulfilling?
Your visions are essential. They are the spark of life. They hold hopefulness and a sense of possibility. They deeply reflect who you are and what really matters to you.
Your dreams are the fuel for your life.
But many people don’t pursue their dreams.
Negative thoughts, fears, and doubts get tangled up in your dreams and become so entwined that you can’t think of your dreams without instantly having a negative reaction like, “That will never happen.” I call them “little beasties.”
These “little beasties” are sneaky. They settle in ever-so-quietly over your vision so that you don’t even realize they’re there. You can hardly see them, yet they are so powerful! They are quiet yet very loud!
They say things like, “Who do you think you are? You can’t do that!” or “Ha! You’re too stupid to do that!” or “No one is ever going to want to hire you to do that!” or …… You get the idea.
They swoop in on your sparkling bright dream and create such a dark shadow that you can hardly see it.
What to do?
Here are some strategies for taming your little beasties.
- Get to know them. Sit down with four pieces of paper and write a dream or vision of something you want to do, achieve, or bring about. Then write down all the reasons you tell yourself it’s not possible. Notice a theme? The better you get at recognizing your beasties, the better you’ll be able to deal with them when they show up.
- When your beasties show up, don’t try to push them away. Picture yourself patting them on the head, thanking them for their input, and let them know it’s time to step aside.
- Say to yourself these three powerful words: “Nevertheless, I am willing to take this next step toward making this dream come true,” and proceed with taking the next action step.
When you untangle your beasties from your dreams, you will be free to take action over and over again until your dreams come true!
